Orthodontics for Children in Westchase and South Tampa, FL
As parents, ensuring your child’s smile is healthy and developing properly is a top priority. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven or eight. This early visit allows us to assess their dental development and determine whether early orthodontic intervention, also known as Phase 1 treatment, is necessary.
What is early orthodontic treatment?
Dr. Goodnight and Dr. Mathews recommend early orthodontic treatment, or Phase 1 treatment, in about 25-30% of children. It is only needed in specific cases where early intervention can prevent more serious dental and jaw issues later. If necessary, this treatment typically lasts between six to 12 months and focuses on guiding proper jaw growth and tooth development.
Understanding Phase 1 and Phase 2 Treatment
Phase 1 Treatment: This is performed while a child is between the ages of seven and ten and still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. It is only recommended in specific cases where early intervention can improve jaw structure and create a better foundation for future orthodontic treatment.
Phase 2 Treatment: Once all permanent teeth have erupted, around age 11 to 13, Phase 2 treatment completes the process. At this stage, traditional braces or Invisalign® are used to perfect the alignment of the teeth and bite.
When is Phase 1 treatment necessary?
Phase 1 orthodontic treatment is usually recommended when a child’s dental development requires proactive intervention to prevent future complications. Common reasons for Phase 1 treatment include:
- Growth Asymmetries: If one jaw is growing faster than the other, early treatment can help correct imbalances, reducing the likelihood of needing surgical orthodontics in the future.
- Preventing Impacted Teeth: Some permanent teeth may not have enough space to erupt properly. Early treatment can create the necessary space, avoiding impactions that could require extractions or more complex orthodontic work later.
- Protecting Protruding Front Teeth: If a child has severely protruding front teeth, they are at a higher risk for trauma or injury. Early orthodontics can adjust their position, reducing this risk.
- Expanding the Jaw for Proper Alignment: At a young age, the upper jaw can still be widened effectively. Expanding it at this stage can prevent the need for permanent tooth extractions later and help align the bite properly as permanent teeth emerge.
